Churchill Downs has announced plans to build a $200 million horse racing and gaming facility in Northern Kentucky. The Business Courier reports The New Latonia Racing & Gaming facility will host a racetrack, historical race wagering facility and year-round training facilities.
The hope is to bring live winter racing to the undisclosed location in Latonia. If approved the first live thoroughbred race would be held in 2020 at Churchill Downs. It would move to the Northern Kentucky location once building is completed.
The first phase will cost $150 million and would have 1,500 slot-like machines, a one-mile synthetic race track, clubhouse, food and beverage venues and much more. The second phase costing $50 million could include a hotel.
The facility is expected to create 400 full and part-time jobs plus 800 construction jobs.
Turfway Park in Florence is also getting an upgrade to its facility. It was recently sold to Hard Rock International. It’s expected to offer gaming and several improvements to the building. Hard Rock has not confirmed if it will build a hotel at the site.
